Ensemble 360 to release ‘Pierrot Portraits’
‘Pierrot Portraits’ (Onyx ONYX4246), a striking new album from Ensemble 360 and soprano Claire Booth, conceived to mark the 150th anniversary of Arnold Schönberg’s birth, is to be released this month.
‘Pierrot Portraits’ takes Arnold Schönberg’s monumental Pierrot Lunaire, op. 21 as its starting point, expanding its vision of the commedia dell’arte character Pierrot through an eclectic programme of works inspired by this iconic figure.
The album includes works by Schönberg’s contemporaries Joseph Marx, Max Kowalski, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Amy Beach and Régine Poldowski, as well as character pieces by Schumann and Debussy. Thea Musgrave’s 1985 Pierrot receives a fresh interpretation on this disc.
‘Pierrot Portraits’ will be released on 27 September in physical and digital form. Three of four planned advance singles from the album are now available to stream:
Marx ‘Pierrot Dandy’ – Claire Booth (Voice) and Tim Horton (Piano)
Korngold ‘Tanzlied des Pierrot’ from Die tote Stadt, op. 12 – Gemma Rosefield (Cello) and Tim Horton (Piano), of Ensemble 360
Schönberg ‘Parodie’ from Pierrot Lunaire – Claire Booth and Ensemble 360 (Juliette Bausor, Robert Plane, Benjamin Nabarro, Gemma Rosefield, Tim Horton)

Tim Horton’s recital at Kettle’s Yard looks to the past for answers to the future
Tim Horton’s showcase solo piano recital will be at Kettle’s Yard in Cambridge on Thursday 16th March.
His programme focuses on contemporary works that “look to the past for answers to the future”. Thomas Adès pays homage to Chopin in his Three Mazurkas, Op. 27, while Julian Philips’s Barcarola transports the audience to an intimate 19th-century salon, but with a modern and somewhat unsettling take on the tradition of the ‘boat song’. Helen Grime’s 10 Miniatures throw new light on a form that has been popular amongst composers for centuries, as she explores the idea of transforming material in unusual ways, each mini character piece based on some small fragment of what came before.

Sheffield Chamber Music Festival 2022
It’s great to be back in the Crucible with the first full festival since 2019. Helen Grime has done an amazing job putting together some of the best programmes I’ve ever been involved in. There’s lots of new music and at least one piece by a female composer in every concert. The audiences are great. I don’t think people are as scared of contemporary music as we’re led to believe, especially if it’s programmed as well as this.
