Tim Horton to conclude Sheffield Chopin Cycle in April

Pianist Tim Horton will soon conclude his two-season Chopin Cycle for Music in the Round with a final recital in April, and also looks forward to performing much of the same repertoire in Ireland next month.

The cycle was initiated at the invitation of Sheffield’s Music in the Round, following the success of his complete Beethoven and Schubert Sonata cycles as part of their programming in 2011-15 and 2017-19 respectively. Since 2022, Tim has devised six programmes for Music in the Round that have placed Chopin’s works for solo piano alongside repertoire by related and contrasting composers. In March 2022, he was featured on BBC Radio 3’s In Tune, speaking to host Sean Rafferty about the project.

One of the UK’s leading pianists, Tim is equally at home in solo and chamber repertoire. He is a founder member of both the Leonore Piano Trio and Ensemble 360 and has been a regular guest pianist with many of the UK’s leading chamber groups. He made his solo debut at Wigmore Hall in 2016, returning in early 2021 to perform a programme of Mozart, Chopin and Szymanowski, and will be giving further solo recitals in the coming seasons.

Tim describes Chopin’s music as ‘absolutely universal’. Speaking to Music in the Round, he says that ‘the music itself is so sophisticated, so interesting, so beautiful … it’s like all great music, it plumbs the depths, it has layers of emotional content.’

The cycle will come to a close in a performance at Sheffield’s Music in the Round on 6th April 2024. A few weeks before this, he will perform as part of Drogheda Classical Music, which brings some of the most renowned musicians in the world to Ireland’s north-east.
