Tim joins a roster of distinguished artists to honour the life and legacy of the late Alfred Brendel in a celebratory concert at London’s Barbican Centre early next year.
Held on what would have been Brendel’s 95th birthday, this concert brings together some of the musicians to whom he was closest over the course of his distinguished career. Brendel’s extraordinary influence on the world of classical music will be marked by performances of chamber and orchestral music by composers whose works represent his musical inspirations, taking place in three parts over the course of the evening.
Tim’s early career success came in part as the result of an invitation from Brendel to give two performances of Schoenberg’s Piano Concerto with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and Sir Simon Rattle at Symphony Hall, Birmingham and at the Royal Festival Hall in 1995. Following these performances, Tim was asked to give concerts with the RLPO, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group and Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, paving the way for his esteemed career as a soloist and chamber musician. Following Brendel’s death earlier this year, Tim spoke to the BBC World Service about his mentor, remarking on Brendel’s “completely unique musical voice”, remembering a man who was at once fiercely intelligent and deeply funny.
As part of this concert, Tim will perform Liszt’s Elegie no. 2 for cello and piano with Adrian Brendel, and will join Sir Simon Rattle and Pierre-Laurent Aimard at the piano for Kagel’s 1984 work Oath of Hippocrates for piano three hands. The concert takes place on 5th January at 7pm, with all proceeds supporting the work of the Alfred Brendel Young Musician’s Trust.
