Tashmina Artists Rachel Roberts (viola), Tim Horton (piano) and Robert Plane (clarinet) appear with Ensemble 360 in various combinations for four BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concerts this week.
Presented by BBC Radio 3’s Sarah Walker, the programmes draw from concerts in November 2022 at Cast Doncaster, Emmanuel Church Barnsley and Sheffield’s Upper Chapel, recorded as part of Music in the Round’s autumn series.
The first concert goes out tomorrow (Tuesday 31st January), and will feature Tim Horton playing Brahms’s Three Intermezzi for Piano, Op. 117, as well as Rachel Roberts performing in Vaughan Williams’s Piano Quintet and Josef Suk’s Meditation on an old Czech Chorale for string quartet. The programme begins at 1pm, and will be available after broadcast via this link.
The second concert, on Wednesday, sees Rachel Roberts in Vaughan Williams’s Oboe Concerto in its arrangement for oboe and string quartet, then joined by Robert Plane and Tim Horton for Ernő Dohnányi’s Sextet in C major. Wednesday 1st February at 1pm, and available after broadcast via this link.
Thursday’s concert features Rachel Roberts in a programme of music for string quartet: Harry Burleigh’s Two Spirituals, Antonin Dvořák’s ‘American’ Quartet, and Bedřich Smetana’s first Quartet, ‘From my life’. Thursday 2nd February at 1pm, and available after broadcast via this link.
In the fourth and final concert of the week, Tim Horton performs Ravel’s Sonatine for solo piano, before Robert Plane and Rachel Roberts appear in Brahms’s Clarinet Quintet. Friday 3rd February, and available after broadcast via this link.
Ensemble 360 – of which Rachel, Tim and Rob are all permanent members – is Music in the Round’s resident chamber ensemble, playing a key role in the annual Sheffield Chamber Music Festival and performing frequently across South Yorkshire and around the country throughout the year. They have just been announced on the shortlist for a 2023 RPS Award in the Ensemble category, with the results being announced in a ceremony at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall on Wednesday 1st March.
