Following the success of his recent Chopin cycle for Wigmore Hall, pianist Tim Horton turns his attention to Beethoven in a new survey of the composer’s piano sonatas.
This series takes place at the invitation of Sheffield’s Music in the Round, for whom Tim has previously undertaken cycles of Schubert, Beethoven and Chopin’s works for solo piano. Of his performance for the series in 2022 of Beethoven’s Sonata no. 30 in E major, Bachtrack wrote “Horton brought much colour to the black and white – power and precision, then delicacy and dreams… The studio was gripped as he progressed from what seems like Beethoven exploring the feelings of his turbulent past in the first movement, to his hope of some future serenity in the second and last.”
Tim begins his new cycle with a concert on 5th December at the Crucible Playhouse in Sheffield. The programme includes Beethoven’s seminal Piano Sonata no. 23 in F minor, op. 57, Appassionata, which will be performed alongside the Piano Sonatas no. 1 in F minor, op. 2, no. 1, no. 3 in C major, op. 2, no. 3 and no. 2 in A major, op. 2, no. 2.
